Capsule Wardrobe: What It Is & How To Build One

A capsule wardrobe is technically defined as a minimal collection of clothing that can be worn interchangeably to suit any occasion. Basically, it just means every single item in your wardrobe matches so you can quite literally throw on any top with any bottom and they’ll definitely look good together.

Sounds fantastic, right? A hassle-free wardrobe that’s pretty much already styled. And of course, there’s a little bit you have to do in curating the clothes at first but after that, it’s less stressing and more dressing.

TOPS/T-Shirt

Men

First things first, create a good base with some
neutral-coloured t-shirts, whether it’s a crew neck, v-neck or a good old
henley. Black and white are a must-must have–both look good on their own and
are great for layering. Then, add a few shirts to the mix. Again, we really
recommend a classic white button-down but also add colours and patterns that
speak to your style–perhaps a flannel or a fun floral print. We also love
adding textural diversity so definitely throw in a corduroy or a shirt. Now,
sweaters and sweatshirts? Keep it classic with a crew neck sweatshirt or
relaxed with a hoodie or both.

Women

We know timeless women's fits are a bit trickier
because women’s clothes tend to keep changing with trends but it’s not impossible. Once again, we start
with the unbeatable basic–tees. And once again, we strongly suggest neutral
colours, especially the very versatile white. But feel free to swap out or even
supplement with simple tanks, they’re equally good for layering or being worn
on their own. Next up, pick a few blouses you’re obsessed with, you know the
ones that really make you feel like you. For instance, a satin button-down for
a touch of class and sensuality. Or opt instead for a denim shirt because it’s
more you.

BOTTOMS

Men

You know we’re going to start by recommending a solid pair
of jeans that can go with anything. And of course, what better than the 501s?
You can also pick any of our other straight-leg jeans–they’re pretty hard to go
wrong with. A medium-wash, straight-leg
denim is pretty much the definition of timeless (according to us). Now, for
when you don’t feel like living in jeans, non-denim pants like our XX Chinos are a no-brainer. Elegant yet comfy,
these everyday pants were crafted to match everything and what’s more, they
come in a wide range of colours. If you live somewhere warm, then we just have
to mandate shorts. Pick from our classic fit cotton shorts or denim or even both
and try to get them in a neutral shade. Finally, sweats for when you’re in the
mood to just kick back and relax.

Women

When it comes to denim, we’ll say the same thing we always
say–you can never go wrong with the timeless, uber-versatile medium wash, straight
leg and an iconic denim jacket. And by now you probably know our go-to recco is
the iconic 501s. Black jeans are another pair we strongly believe are a must as
they’re easy not just in terms of fit but because they’ll match anything.
Moving on to non-denim. Opt for well-tailored trousers for a polished yet laid
back aesthetic. From work to a night out, they always match the vibe. When you
just want to lounge and be 100% comfy and also 100% in style: Joggers. Now when
it’s too hot to wear full pants, you need shorts. Sweat shorts will keep you in
that cozy lounge zone and denim cut-offs will elevate – both are essential.
Lastly, grab a nice skirt. Specifically, a chic button-front skirt in a fun
colour that will pair well with anything.

OUTERWEAR

You know we can’t let you go without insisting on a jacket
of some sort. Definitely get your hands on the OG of jackets– the trucker jacket. Classic and clean, they not only match
every fit but every mood. Men, for extra warmth, try the sherpa or the biker
jacket. Women, a white collared jacket will be your companion for life.
